I lived in Georgia for over 4 years, stationed at Fort Gordon near Augusta for a year while going through school and then again for almost 4 years as an instructor. My children grew up there, and some would say I started to grow up there (not sure I have grown up yet). My focus on my early years was raising my family and making a living. Images from those days are focused on my children and little else. Many are black and white, since that was my preferred canvas. As I work through the thousands if negatives, I will add to my collection.

Since my Fort Gordon days, I have returned on numerous occasions and even considered moving to Atlanta after my return from Australia. I have fallen in love with Savannah and feature an extensive gallery of my visits there. With stops around the state, I will try to hit the highpoints in this narrative.

Atlanta is a big city, largest in Atlanta with a metropolis population of over 6 million people. I actually lived in Atlanta for a few months when transitioning from the Army and before moving to Colorado. I remember traffic. I would drive from Atlanta to Augusta when not working and at times the drive from Northern Atlanta to I-20 would take as long as the trip along I-20. Later, with young bride in tow we visited Stone Mountain and get a taste of old South. The confederate monument to three Confederate leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson overshadows the remainder of the park. We were able to see an antebellum plantation complete with slave quarters. I think this was the highlight of the trip for Vicky. All my recent visits have been for business with little time for sight seeing. Atlanta would seem a place to meander a little while and hope I have the opportunity to do so.

My brother-in-law and family lives in a small town called Odum near Savannah and the Georgia Florida State line. A small community, we had the opportunity to spend a day on his wife’s family farm. We also saw some of the destruction from a tornado that touched down on the land. Great food, feeding tangerines to the cows and of course great hospitality were highlights. I am confident we will visit again.
